The first time i heard someone say "Monies" in a meeting

Published ยท 1 min read

The first time I heard someone say "monies" in a meeting, I had no idea what the word was. And because I didn't know the word, I lost the thread of the whole conversation.

Some context. I was working for a French company at the time, and everyone in the room was French except me. That meant two things. First, words and sometimes whole sentences would unintentionally slip into French. Second, I had learned not to pretend. If I missed something, I asked. That had worked fine up to this point.

So when "monies" came up and I couldn't place it, I did what I always did. With full honesty and full curiosity, I asked the room: "What is monies?"

Everyone looked at me like I had just farted.

The speaker, a short, skinny French guy, looked at me and rubbed his thumb and fingers together. The universal sign for money.

"You mean money?" I said out loud.

Again, the whole room looked at me like I was wasting their time. Which is funny, because this was the fourth meeting about the same issue.

I looked around the room and said, "I'll address this later, but money doesn't need an S at the end of it. Does it mean something different when you add the S?" By now I could see a couple of the managers getting frustrated with the unhelpful tangent I had taken the meeting down.

So I said thank you for explaining, I understand now, and let the meeting continue.

He kept saying "monies" the entire time I worked there.
